McCord still banned from the Masters

Back in 1995, CBS television golf analyst Gary McCord got banned from the Masters for saying "they don't cut the greens here at Augusta, they use bikini wax." He also described the bumpy terrain as looking "suspiciously like body bags."

These quotes are definitely not ideal for the Masters telecast, but it seems a warning or suspension could have been sufficient. McCord has a different type of humor, and his banter with David Feherty makes for good television. It would be nice to see him return to Augusta now that it's been 16 years.

Tom Watson actually wrote a letter to CBS and the Masters chairman demanding that McCord be fired, and apparently this had a big effect on McCord's future at the tournament.

McCord isn't the first to be blackballed from the Masters. Jack Whitaker was taken off the air for comments during a playoff at the 1966 Masters when he called the gallery a "mob." Whitaker's suspension lasted four years.

"I assume that what I did is viewed as something short of manslaughter," said McCord. "It's a misdemeanor, not a felony. With good behavior I may be out on parole in a couple of years." This may turn out to be a life sentence for McCord.

    1. You are an idiot. Read the Constitution before you go spouting off about free speech. For the last time, the 1st Amendment is referring to you being able to disagree with the Government and have no fear of reprisals. It does not refer to what a golf broadcaster says on air and what a PRIVATE club does. Do they not teach understanding the Constitution and what it applies to anymore? I am so tired of people screaming 1st amendment every time they say something stupid.

    2. And you are an ass-hole! Those elitist bastards than run the Masters are a bunch of backwoods hillbilly dick-wads. Kudo's to Garry McCord for saying what he did. I wish more people would speak up instead of cow-toeing to these country club douche-bags!!!!

  2. To the board governing the Masters tournament: somebody needs to put a whoopee cushion on the seat of your chairs. If you can't laugh at yourself once in a while, quit. There are far more serious things happening to our country than to watch a bunch of stiff octogenarians proclaim that they represent some kind of holy shrine of golf. It is a sad thing when a person can't laugh at themselves or enjoy a good ribbing. So my advice to you is this; put away the expensive bubbly, get a six pack of Millers, lean back in your recliners and prepare to enjoy the fun of Feherty and McCord at the best that anyone can do. It's called humor and we all need extra doses of it during these hard times.

  3. Gary Mccord is the worst announcer in golf!! He is terrible and his comments are ridiculous !!! Peter Jacobson is much much better!!! Drives me crazy how Gary ends every sentence with the emphasis on the last word!! He needs to be fired from CBS as well!!!

  4. Why would Tom Watson's word carry any weight? He was (still is an alcholic) mean drunk. Terrible to his first wife??? So his word carries weight??? Come on he Tom Watson did far worse than what Gary McCord did. As for Peter Jacobson bein a better announcer - I think he forgets he is watching not playing. Then you have Brandel Chamblee - talks like he has played golf ??? To bad we never heard of him or what he thinks he has done.

  6. Yes, all of you anonymous comments. Wonder if you would be so mouthy and opinionated if you had to talk to each other face to face. You are the idiots, both of you.

    1. There are many clubs in the US that do not have women members. Not all are in the South. It doesn't mean they are KKK groups. The KKK hates minorities, not women. You sound ridiculous.

  8. McCord should be left back into the masters broadcasts. He paid his due for this. I despise those masters officials and the way they act with such arrogance. They not only control who can join by discrimination, they also control how much TV broadcasting can be done on Thursday thru Saturday. This is 2012, let the CEO of IBM be a member just like the previous one's that got invited and get OFF the bigotry that she is a woman.

    2. For most, its just for prestige and title. Many masters members don't even bother going to the club. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are members and they could care less about "GOLF". Masters officials are bullys and need put in their place. Shame them to death, they are still living in the 18th century.

    3. It's a private club, that is why they can do this. They run everything that pertains to the club....

  10. Wow, what a master of the English language!!! And I am sure you'll use the opportunity now for a come-back to showcase your remarkable library of curse words, however it would be a better use of your time to find a real library

  11. Agree with the comments about McCord being the worst announcer in golf, but I'd extend that to all of sports. Why does CBS keep this moron on TV?? He's not funny (but thinks he's hilarious), his mustache looks ridiculous and talks WAY too much. Even Ferrady, his long time side-kick, is beginning to not respond to his asinine comments. Faldo already altogether ignores him. I was just watching the Byron Nelson Classic and for half the round he kept focusing on the X in player Jonas Blixt last name like a 5 year old who just learned how to read. I had to put the TV on mute to watch the rest of the match. I can't think of another announcer I've had to do this with. For a while I've just put up with him and tried to be good natured about it, but I'm done. Is this really what CBS wants? FIRE HIS ASS!

  12. Yes, those old guard finally let some women in the club. Now if we could just get McCord reinstated.

  15. Just finished watching the RBC Heritage golf event. McCord thinks he's witty but he's a vapid bore rehashing the same tired wholly contrived jokes, comments, inflections- a total self-absorbed phony. Golf is nothing but a forum for his precious airtime. Please fire this droll troll idiot and maybe he'll just go away. Feherty is marginally better mainly because he seems to actually love and respect the game down deep. But a McCord event means muting the telecast; and that is a damn shame.
